New Year's Eve in Russia Today I wanna talk to you about the history of New Year's Eve in Russia. It is very interesting question, so listen carefully. In 1699, Tsar Peter the Great decided it was time for a change. That year, he moved the start of the new year to January 1st, as part of an effort to modernize the country. He also shaved several thousand years off the date, taking Russia from 7208 to 1700 In Ancient Rus, New year eve was celebrated on 1st march and the new year's tree was cherry tree. Later, the new year eve was on 1 september and his symbol were bread wheat ears Later on 1st january 1700 Peter the Great said that houses must be decoreted with forever green branch of tree. Since then new year eve will be associate with smell of pine. On January 7, 1852 in St. Petersburg in the Ekaterina's station (presently Moscow) the public Christmas tree for the first time was decorated.. The top was decorated by a star. The tradition of decorating trees to celebrate Christmas began Martin Luther in 1513. According to the legend, on his way home one evening, Martin Luther was so overcome by the beauty of a tree and stars in the sky, he wanted to tell his family about it. However, upon returning home, words failed him, so he went out and chopped the down and brought it home to share with his family. To mimic the stars that hung over the manger where Christ was born, Martin Luther decorated the tree with candle tapers. This legend is famous all round the world. In America, 1st christmas tree was decorated for George Washington by German soldier volunteers during the 1776 war. In Ancient Rus, first christmas tree appeared in German slobodan. At the night of 31 to 1 january 1699 in Russia appeared new tradition. Tsar decided that new holiday must be celebreted with fire and rumble. In these times Fireworks were something unknown in Russia. So, Tsar make decidion to set off in night sky 15 thousand missiles. In 18th century in Russia was celebrated first firework with featurning Empress Elizabeth of Russia. Since then Elisabeth started organise fireworks displays. At that time, new new year's tradition were new year greetings. Monarchs greeted each other and they tried to guess which will be new year. on1 st january everybody visited each other at home. Regards came with greetings cards which was really popular resource of communicaton in 19th century. The Christmas tree was banned in the Soviet Union, but reinstated as the Новогодняя ёлка (Novogodnyaya yolka, "New-year fir-tree" in 1935, and remains part of the Russian New Year traditions. Grandfather Frost is said to deposit presents under the tree. Snegurochka helps her grandfather Ded Moroz in his journey to bring all the gifts. The holiday was first positively made aware after Pavel Postyshev sent a letter to a public newspaper in 1936 and later accepted in 1947 as a holiday, from 1930 till 1947 it was just a regular work day, but later it become a no-work day; till the early 1990s it was considered as the only acceptable public noncommunist celebration. Novy God is a major holiday also in other countries of the Former Soviet Union, marked by a massively produced Novogodni Ogonek (New Year's Party): a televised celebration that includes performances from favorite pop singers and professional dance troupes, not unlike The Oscars or the MTV VMAs, with famous personalities and celebrities as presenters. It is also popular in many countries that were formerly part of the now-defunct Soviet Union. The coming of the new year is marked by the Kremlin Clock striking twelve. Immigrants and non Russian citizens often start to celebrate using the Russian time zone. As this holiday is defined as a nonreligious celebration, many non-Christian people still celebrate the holiday. The week between New Year and Christmas (celebrated on 7 January, corresponding to Christmas Day according to the Julian Calendar) is usually taken off (Новогодние каникулы "New Year's holiday"). The story of the New Year in Russia is very interesting. Most of the information comes from the movie "300 years of the new year." Thank you for your attention.
